Weekley trying to accomplish rare repeat

Published Sunday, April 20th, 2008

Boo Weekley, the 2007 Verizon Heritage champion and the 2008 54-hole leader, will try to be the first to repeat at Harbour Town Golf Links since Davis Love III in 1992.

Though the last golfer to try failed, he said the pressure of trying to defend didn't get to him.

"For me, there's no extra pressure if I'm defending champion or not," said 2006 winner Aaron Baddeley. "I just treat it as a separate and new event."

Baddeley tied for 10th in his defense last year. He's also in the mix this year -- his 4-under 67 on Saturday put him at 10 under for the tournament, five shots off Weekley's lead.

HERITAGE NEAR SELLOUT

Tournament director Steve Wilmot was confident, but not certain, that this year's event will be a sellout for the third consecutive year. The number of tickets available fluctuates a bit because of daily passes issued as part of some sponsorship packages, and the tournament also awaits a full report of sales at the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce sites.

Wilmot said the slow economy has cost the tournament some sponsors, including at least "one six-digit sponsor," but he expects tournament revenue to rebound when the economy does.

THE EYE CAN'T SEE EVERYTHING

All three networks in the New York-New Jersey area are preempting regular schedules to cover Pope Benedict XVI's visit to New York City. That includes the CBS affiliates, and that means the network's Verizon Heritage coverage isn't being carried on television in those markets.

However, CBS streamed its coverage, including commercials, to cbssports.com and pgatour.com on Saturday and will do so again today from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.. This is the first time CBS and the tour have streamed coverage on the Internet, and the PGA Tour expected 1 million visitors to its Web site this weekend.

THIS AND THAT

Weekley is in position to win for the second time in his career at the same event. The last player to win the same event for his first two PGA Tour victories is J.B. Holmes, who won the FBR Open this year and in 2006. The last player to win the same event for his first two victories in consecutive years was Vaughn Taylor at the 2004 and 2005 Reno Tahoe Open. ... Weekley now has seven consecutive rounds in the 60s at Harbour Town. The event record is nine, by Nick Price (last three in 1996, all four in 1997 and the first two in 1998.) ... Only three of the past 10 54-hole leaders have gone on to win -- Peter Lonard in 2005, Justin Leonard in 2002 and Davis Love III in 1998. ... Playing on a major medical exemption, Shane Bertsch's 5-under 66 was his best score since round four of the 2008 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. Bertsch, who competed in only four events in 2007 before vertigo ended his season, has 28 events in 2008 to make $774,164 to retain his card. He starts today's round tied for 14th.

 The Verizon Heritage Skinny
WHO held the record for the most rounds in the 60s to start their Heritage career before Boo Weekley surpassed that mark Thursday? Jesper Parnevik (1994) and Tim Clark (2003) shot four rounds in the 60s in their debuts but couldn't extend the streaks in their sophomore efforts. Weekley, who won the Heritage in his 2007 debut, now has seven consecutive rounds in the 60s.

WHAT club did Anthony Kim use for his third shot on the par-3 13th hole? A sand wedge, which would not be terribly unusual, except that Kim's ball was on the green. Chipping from a spot near the front of the green, 55 feet from a pin cut in the rear left, he ran the shot 20 feet past the hole. He made a bogey on the hole.

HOW did Jason Bohn, who is tied for third at 10 under, finance his early professional career? Bohn won $1 million in a 1992 Hole-in-One shootout, hitting a 135-yard ace with a 9-iron at the Pritchard Golf Club in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Bohn, 19 at the time, had to give up his amateur status and eligibility at the University of Alabama for the prize, which pays him $50,000 a year through 2012.
