As good as the opening two rounds were for a trio of Clemson Tigers, Saturday's round was equally disappointing.
Lucas Glover, the leader entering Saturday, shot a 2-over 73, dropping him into a seventh-place tie at 8 under. D.J. Trahan struggled throughout the day on his way to a 75, while Jonathan Byrd (72) also recorded a round over par.
Glover was at 12 under after his second birdie of the day on the fifth hole, but he bogeyed four of the final six holes for a frustrating finish.
"I shot myself right out of the tournament," Glover said.
Glover's play down the stretch puts him seven shots behind leader Boo Weekley entering play today, which he said puts him out of reach for a tartan jacket.
"He's playing too well to play poorly," Glover said. "I got to post a number and hope it's enough. But he's playing too well."
Weekley didn't seem at all bothered by the first windy day of the Heritage. Trahan viewed the windy climate as a chance to climb the leaderboard at Harbour Town Golf Links. But while the wind was present Saturday afternoon, Trahan's move up the leaderboard was nowhere to be found.
The former Hilton Head Island resident shot his worst round of this year's Heritage, a 4-over 75, on his way back to even par for the three-day total.
"It ticks me off, because today's the kind of day you shoot 5 under and you leap people," Trahan said. "The wind's blowing hard enough out here that if you shoot a good round of golf, you can really pass a lot of people.
"And I went in the wrong direction."
As did several of his tee shots.
Trahan hit only six of 14 fairways on the afternoon, dropping him to a 49th-place tie after being in 14th after the first round and 26th heading into play Saturday.
"I'm not out here to shoot 75. I'm out here to shoot 65," Trahan said. "And anytime you shoot 75, you're fed up. You're ticked off. And that's what I am."
Byrd's round was much more pleasing, with the exception of one hole. It included three birdies compared to just one bogey. But it also included a triple bogey on the eighth hole.
Byrd hit his second shot into the water left of the eighth green. He also missed a 3-foot putt on the hole, capping a nightmarish set of shots and ruining a potential quality round.
South Carolina graduate Brett Quigley didn't fare much better than his Clemson counterparts. Quigley carded a 3-over 74 for the day, putting him into a 56th-place tie at 1 over for the tournament.
