Welcome to NIE - Newspapers in Education!
The Newspapers in Education program is a cooperative effort of The Island Packet and The Beaufort Gazette working with local schools to utilize the newspaper as a dynamic teaching tool and decrease the illiteracy rate in Beaufort and Jasper counties.
Newspapers in Education is devoted to providing a service to children, education and the community. The program is grounded in the belief that use of the newspaper is an essential element in educating today's youth to make them into tomorrow's leaders.
Everyday Kindness
Your students can learn how to posses EVERYDAY KINDNESS with the special section sponsored by Friendly's Restaurant.
The Island Packet and The Beaufort Gazette offer this special section FREE to elementary and middle schools -- it's the perfect lesson for Valentine's Day.

This tab's focus is the kind of kindness that's not a "random act" but a regular, rewarding part of everyday life. It shows the whys and hows of behavior that makes life more pleasant for everyone. It covers civility, manners, protocol and the social mores of a multi-cultural society.
Included in this educational supplement are activities students can do in and out of class to further their knowledge -- most include the use of a newspaper. Teachers will receive the "Everyday Kindness" special section inserted in the newspaper Tuesday, Feb. 14. Teachers will also receive newspapers Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 15 and 16 to use with the special section.
Everyday Kindness is available FREE to all elementary and middle school students in Beaufort and Jasper counties. It is sponsored by Friendly's Restaurant.

About NIE
NIE utilizes newspapers in the classroom to help children understand our changing world and reinforce basic skills. The NIE program at our newspapers is part of a national effort to increase student desire and ability to read a newspaper and other forms of literature. A newspaper in the classroom connects young people with their community, the nation and the world. The newspaper is an innovative and ever-changing textbook. It is adaptable to all grade levels and curriculum areas.
What NIE does for students
• The Newspaper Association of America Foundation commissioned a study, which found that students in schools with at least some Newspapers in Education programs scored 10 percent better on standardized tests than students in schools that had no NIE programs.
• Students who use the newspaper as a textbook in middle- and high-school English classes significantly increase their vocabulary, reading comprehension and writing performance.
• Students who are taught reading the daily newspaper jumped an entire grade level above those taught with traditional textbooks.
• Using the newspaper increases student motivation, improves test scores and bridges the gap between the real world and the classroom.
To NIE Parents
Along with children using The Island Packet or The Beaufort Gazette in their classrooms, we encourage parents and children to read the newspaper together because a parent is a child's first teacher. Reading the newspaper together can be a special time for parents and children to share their thoughts and interests and of course, encourage an appreciation for reading.
Newspapers are great for kids of all ages. For younger readers, besides the photos and comics, ask the children to pick out letters from the headlines of The Island Packet or The Beaufort Gazette or read aloud to them. For more experienced readers, pick out various articles of interest to your children and discuss them. It can be about an issue at school or even their favorite movie. Use the weather page to help plan upcoming family get-togethers or check out the event calendars to see what activities are available in the Lowcountry for your family to do together.
Just taking a few minutes to read The Island Packet or The Beaufort Gazette with your child can make a world of difference. Please encourage your children's schools to take advantage of the free programs that Newspapers in Education offer.
